Traffic Update: Speed Cushions Planned for Mt. Paran Road Near Jackson Elementary
The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) and Atlanta Public Schools (APS) have been working together on traffic safety improvements near Jackson Elementary School. As part of those efforts, speed cushions are planned for Mt. Paran Road immediately on either side of the school, with installation expected in November.
What is a speed cushion? A speed cushion is not a speed bump nor a speed table (think Blackland or Harris Trail). A speed cushion is a raised section of pavement designed to slow passenger vehicles down, while larger emergency vehicles can fit over them without slowing. There are examples near Sarah Smith Elementary and Piedmont Hospital.
The MPNCA supports efforts to improve safety around Jackson Elementary, and recognizes the importance of addressing speeding concerns. We also want to keep our residents informed as these changes move forward.
MPNCA has been in discussions with ATLDOT regarding speeding and traffic safety along Mt. Paran Road since a meeting approximately a year ago, following a serious accident at Mt. Paran Road and Paran Place. At that meeting, several follow-up actions were identified, including collecting speed data at locations of concern. We have since reached back out to ATLDOT to better understand how these improvements fit into a broader traffic-calming plan for Mt. Paran Road.
We recognize that residents have differing perspectives on speed cushions and other traffic-calming measures. Our goal is to ensure the neighborhood has accurate information and to remain engaged with the City as this and other safety improvements are considered.
We will share additional information as it becomes available. In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns about traffic safety along Mt. Paran Road, please contact Fred Meyer at fredmeyer435@gmail.com.

|
During the month of September, we had no crimes reported within the neighborhood footprint served by the MPNCA. This compares to no crimes reported in September 2025. Thanks as always to our Security Patrol and our shared commitment to watching out for one another – we remain one of the safest neighborhoods in Atlanta! Security Patrol Statistics • Hours worked by the MPNCA Security Patrol in September: 304 • House checks performed by the MPNCA Security Patrol in September: 917 • MPNCA’s APD-identified security vehicle had no mechanical issues and was on neighborhood patrol every day in September Our 70 hours/week security patrol, conducted by off-duty APD officers in our new APD-identified vehicle continues to help keep all of us safe. The security team patrols the entire neighborhood, checks houses where the owners are out of town, and recommends steps each of us can take to keep our homes and neighborhood secure. We are truly thankful for their continued efforts! Security Reminders MPNCA members receive daily house checks when they are out of town, which provides great peace of mind. Our officers walk the perimeter of your home daily to ensure there are no issues. If there are packages left on the front porch, the security team will move them someplace less obvious. This is one more example of the MPNCA offering terrific value to the neighborhood for 41 years and counting! To request security checks from the MPNCA Security Patrol at your home, please call or text 404-538-8946 or email security@mtparannorthside.com. This service is only available to MPNCA members. We should always be aware of our surroundings and watch out for each other as a community. If you have any questions, please reach out to the security team.
