The Conservation Fund buys 30-acre Buckhead estate for $13.5 million
A national leader in land conservation efforts has acquired the former home of a late renowned Atlanta artist.
Arlington, Virginia-based The Conservation Fund, in partnership with the City of Atlanta, closed on Lucinda Bunnen’s 30-acre Buckhead estate on Oct. 22, in an attempt to preserve a large stretch of forest inside one of Atlanta's most extensively developed neighborhoods.
The nonprofit purchased the property for $13.5 million.
Bonneau Ansley, founder and chairman of Ansley Real Estate Christie’s International, listed the estate on behalf of Bunnen’s family.
The transaction is Atlanta’s priciest residential land sale in 2024, according to First Multiple Listing Service data.
Bunnen was a nationally renowned photographer and philanthropist who left an indelible mark on Atlanta’s arts community.
She and her husband, Bob, first purchased five acres for their home on Randall Mill Road in 1956 and gradually expanded their property over the subsequent decades.
The home itself spans more than 7,000 square feet and features a photographic darkroom, seven bedrooms, five full bathrooms and one half bath, per a listing from Ansley Real Estate.
Additional amenities include a tennis court, swimming pool, 2-mile walking trail circling the estate and easy access to Nancy Creek, which flows through the property.
Bunnen’s work is displayed inside some of the most frequented art museums in the country, including the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
She curated countless exhibitions showcasing her work throughout her decades-long career and received honors from the Atlanta Contemporary Arts Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. She died in 2022.
Bunnen’s family first listed the Buckhead property for $15 million in 2023.
Now, just over a year later, The Conservation Fund is acquiring the estate to honor Bunnen’s legacy and protect the land from potential deforestation driven by future development.
“Our mother, Lucinda, loved this land so much and would’ve been delighted by the Conservation Fund and city’s initiative to preserve it,” said Bunnen’s children in a prepared joint statement.
Stacy Funderburke, regional vice president and Georgia state director of The Conservation Fund, said in a prepared statement that the Bunnen estate will be the largest park addition that the organization has acquired in Buckhead in the 20 years that it has operated in Atlanta.
The city is slated to assume ownership of the estate in 2025, after which future plans for the property will be confirmed, Tucker Sarkisian, an agent with Ansley Real Estate, told Atlanta Business Chronicle.
The Conservation Fund and the City of Atlanta will need to raise an additional $3.4 million to permanently protect the estate. The nonprofit will continue working with the city government and other partners over the next several months to secure the necessary funding.
Community Meeting with Mayor Dickens
Board member Fred Meyer participated in a community meeting with Mayor Dickens on October 16th. The meeting was attended by about 20 local community members and 15 members of the mayor’s staff. Mayor Dickens addressed several items of interest, ranging from a 20-year comprehensive development plan for the city to problems with the aging water supply system to sewer issues that erupted when Hurricane Helene moved through the region last month. Several members of his staff weighed in on questions from community members and provided candid answers to challenging questions. Fred spoke one-on-one with the mayor and presented him with a one-page document outlining three primary concerns of our members which included 911 service, police presence in our area, and the condition of our roads.
Road Repair on Harris Trail
After almost a year and a sustained series of efforts on the part of MPNCA President Sally Riker, repairs to Harris Trail are finally complete. During the substantial rainfall that occurred during Hurricane Helene, a significant part of the road surface eroded, requiring a rebuild of the drainage structure, curbing, and culvert headwall. Thanks to Sally for her tireless work on behalf of our neighborhood, and thanks to our residents for your patience during the repair process.

Safety and Security Update
Security Report for September 2024
Mount Paran recorded 0 reported crimes this month, compared to 1 crime reported in September 2023 (theft from a vehicle).
Members of our neighborhood association, the MPNCA, help our Board and the Security Patrol keep our neighborhood both beautiful and extremely safe. One significant advantage of Mount Paran’s safety is that members of the MPNCA can receive daily house checks when they are out of town, which provides great peace of mind. The officers walk the perimeter of your home and ensure there are no issues. If there are packages left on the front porch, the officers will move them to someplace less obvious. This is one more example of the MPNCA offering value to the neighborhood for 40 years and counting! Please ask any of your neighbors who are not members of the MPNCA to join. We are stronger together and the MPNCA serves all of us! We should always be aware of our surroundings and watch out for each other as a community. If you have any questions, please reach out to security at security@mtparannorthside.com. In addition to the above, we would like to remind residents about:
